Benchmark domestic equity indices, the Sensex and the Nifty, opened lower today but, after a volatile trading session, ended marginally higher. The Sensex added 40 points to close at 83 thousand 978, while the Nifty advanced 41 points to settle at 25 thousand 763. In the broader market indices at the Bombay Stock Exchange closed in positive zone. The Mid-Cap index increased over 0.6 per cent, and the Small-Cap index climbed 0.7 per cent.

In the Sensex pack, 15 out of 30 companies edged upward. Among the top gainers, Mahindra and Mahindra as well as Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, both advanced 1.7 per cent, Eternal added almost one and half a per cent and SBI increased 1.4 per cent. In the top laggards, Maruti plunged nearly 3.4 per cent, ITC dropped one and half a per cent and Tata Consultancy Services fell around 1.4 per cent. 

Among the Sectoral indices at the BSE, 14 out of 21 sectors ended with gains. In the top gainers, Telecommunication rose 2.9 per cent, Realty climbed almost 2.3 per cent, and Healthcare increased over 1.1 per cent.  Among the top laggards, Utilities as well as Consumer Durables, both fell over 0.2 per cent, Focused IT and IT, each dipped over 0.1 per cent, and FMCG slipped marginally.

The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive as shares of 2,227 companies advanced and shares of 2,009 companies declined while shares of 225 companies remained unchanged.
