The Asian Development Bank will provide about $5 billion in financial assistance to Bangladesh over the next five years and plans to raise its annual support to the country by up to 20%.

The announcement came after a high-level ADB delegation, led by its president Masato Kanda, met Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka on Monday.

The meeting discussed Bangladesh’s development priorities, economic challenges and future areas of cooperation, ADB’s Dhaka office said in a statement.

As part of this year’s programme, loan agreements worth about $1.4 billion were signed. This includes an additional $250 million in assistance to address regional and global economic pressures, particularly those caused by the Middle East crisis.

According to ADB, its annual sovereign lending commitment to Bangladesh currently stands at about $2 billion. The bank aims to raise it to around $2.4 billion in the medium term, bringing about $1 billion in additional financing annually within the existing support framework.

ADB said the financing would support Bangladesh’s infrastructure development, energy sector, human resource development and efforts to build a climate-resilient economy.
