AMN New Delhi, May 30: The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) has welcomed the Union Government’s decision to withdraw the draft Sugarcane (Control) Order, 2026, describing it as a major victory for sugarcane farmers and the farmers’ movement across the country.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution withdrew the draft order on Friday, stating that it would revisit the proposal after considering suggestions from state governments and stakeholders. However, AIKS leaders said the rollback was the result of sustained protests and opposition from farmers.
AIKS President Rajan Kshirsagar said the organisation had strongly opposed the draft from the beginning, alleging that it favoured corporate sugar mills at the expense of farmers. Over the past five weeks, AIKS organised conventions, demonstrations and farmer meetings in several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Haryana and Andhra Pradesh.
According to AIKS, the draft order would have harmed farmers by retaining the existing Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) formula, excluding profits from ethanol and other by-products from price calculations, expanding sugar mill monopoly zones and failing to ensure timely payment of cane dues.
AIKS General Secretary Ravula Venkaiah said the withdrawal reflected the strength of farmers’ collective resistance and vowed to remain vigilant against any future anti-farmer provisions.
