India will resume tourist visa services for Bangladeshi nationals from June 28, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi announced on Thursday at a programme at the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) in Dhaka.

The announcement marks a major step towards restoring people-to-people travel between the two countries after India suspended tourist visas following the fall of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government on August 5, 2024. Medical and business visas, however, continued to be issued on a limited basis during the suspension.

Trivedi, who recently took charge as India’s High Commissioner in Dhaka, arrived in Bangladesh on June 12. Earlier on Thursday, he formally presented his credentials to President Mohammed Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban before attending the IVAC event.

The visa suspension followed attacks on Indian facilities in Bangladesh after the August 2024 political upheaval. The Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in Dhanmondi was vandalised and set on fire, while five IVACs in different cities also came under attack. Indian personnel working on development projects reportedly faced threats, prompting the High Commission to scale down visa operations.

Despite the security challenges, India continued visa operations in Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, Sylhet and Rajshahi on humanitarian grounds, especially for Bangladeshi patients seeking treatment in India. According to the High Commission, India has been issuing more than 1,500 visas daily across all categories except tourist visas, with medical and emergency applications receiving priority.
