Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday underscored the pivotal role of India’s leather and footwear industry in the national economy, highlighting that the sector—which currently records annual exports of approximately $4.5 billion—is positioned for significant growth through an expanding network of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).

Speaking at the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) National Export Excellence Awards in New Delhi, the Minister noted that upcoming trade pacts with key markets, including the United Kingdom, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates, would provide a major tailwind for domestic exporters.

Focus on Value Addition and Innovation

To capitalize on these emerging market opportunities, Minister Goyal urged industry stakeholders to shift their focus toward higher value addition. He emphasized four critical pillars for enhancing global competitiveness:

  • Quality and Finishing: Adhering to international standards to capture premium market segments.
  • Sustainability: Adopting eco-friendly manufacturing processes to meet stringent global ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) requirements.
  • Innovation: Leveraging new technologies to streamline production.
  • Design Excellence: Encouraging collaboration with institutions like the National Institute of Design (NID) to modernize product aesthetics.

“Artificial Intelligence can be a game-changer in reviving traditional Indian designs while simultaneously creating new employment opportunities across the value chain,” Mr. Goyal remarked.

Strengthening Global Footprint

The Minister issued a strategic call to action for the industry, urging stakeholders to move beyond traditional manufacturing roles and transition into global brand builders. He specifically advised the industry to:

  • Maximize Participation: Actively utilize upcoming international trade exhibitions to secure global contracts.
  • Expand Logistics: Establish dedicated warehouses and robust marketing networks in foreign jurisdictions to improve delivery timelines and consumer engagement.

Commemoration of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee

Addressing the audience, the Minister also reflected on the significance of the day, marking the 125th birth anniversary of educationist and nationalist Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee. Mr. Goyal paid tribute to Dr. Mookerjee, describing him as a visionary leader characterized by his staunch commitment to ethics and unwavering principles in public life.
