Indian equity benchmarks ended lower on Monday as heavy selling in private banking stocks overshadowed gains in several other sectors, pulling the Nifty below the 24,250 level. Although most frontline banks reported healthy growth in quarterly profits, investors remained cautious amid concerns over margins, earnings quality and management outlooks. Weak global sentiment, persistent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and elevated crude oil prices further dampened risk appetite.
Despite the decline in benchmark indices, broader markets demonstrated resilience. Mid-cap and small-cap shares outperformed the headline indices, indicating that investors continued to selectively accumulate stocks outside the large-cap banking space. Market breadth also remained positive, reflecting sustained buying interest in sectors such as public sector banks, pharmaceuticals, energy and select industrial companies.
The BSE Sensex declined 442.93 points, or 0.57 per cent, to close at 77,708.52, while the Nifty 50 fell 95.80 points, or 0.39 per cent, ending at 24,238.50.
Private Banks Lead Market Decline
The biggest drag on the market came from private banking counters after the latest round of June quarter earnings failed to enthuse investors.
Axis Bank emerged as one of the worst performers, falling 5.37 per cent, despite reporting a 22.52 per cent year-on-year increase in standalone net profit to Rs 7,113.92 crore. Total income rose 6.26 per cent to Rs 40,721.05 crore, but investors appeared concerned over margin pressures and future earnings expectations.
HDFC Bank declined 5.08 per cent even after posting a 4.98 per cent increase in net profit to Rs 19,059.72 crore during the first quarter of FY27. However, the country’s largest private sector lender reported a 7.08 per cent decline in total income to Rs 92,184.38 crore, prompting investors to book profits following the results.
Kotak Mahindra Bank also remained under pressure, losing 1.96 per cent despite reporting a 25.63 per cent rise in quarterly profit to Rs 4,122.96 crore, while total income increased 5.31 per cent.
Yes Bank slipped 2.80 per cent after reporting a 33.7 per cent rise in net profit to Rs 1,071 crore, whereas IDBI Bank fell 2.10 per cent despite posting a 5.37 per cent increase in quarterly earnings.
In contrast, ICICI Bank bucked the trend, rising 1.16 per cent after reporting a 15.95 per cent increase in standalone net profit to Rs 14,804.50 crore, supported by steady growth in total income.
Market participants said the sharp correction in several banking stocks reflected profit-booking rather than any broad deterioration in the sector’s fundamentals.
PSU Banks Continue to Shine
Unlike private lenders, public sector banks attracted strong buying interest.
Punjab National Bank (PNB) surged 5.61 per cent after reporting an impressive 213.63 per cent jump in standalone net profit to Rs 5,253.29 crore during the June quarter. The strong earnings significantly boosted investor confidence in PSU banking stocks, making the sector one of the day’s top performers.
RBL Bank also ended marginally higher after reporting a 26.64 per cent rise in quarterly net profit.
Sectorally, PSU Banks, pharmaceuticals and energy stocks outperformed, helping limit losses in the broader market.
Broader Markets Show Resilience
While benchmark indices remained under pressure, the broader market continued to display strength.
The BSE MidCap Index gained 0.47 per cent, while the BSE SmallCap Index rose 0.21 per cent, suggesting that investors maintained confidence in domestic growth-oriented companies despite weakness in large-cap financial stocks.
Market breadth remained positive on the BSE, where 2,226 shares advanced, 2,039 declined, while 255 stocks remained unchanged.
The India VIX, often regarded as the market’s fear gauge, eased 1.29 per cent to 12.98, indicating that volatility expectations moderated despite the day’s decline.
Parliament Session Begins Amid Political Turbulence
Apart from earnings, investors also monitored political developments as the Monsoon Session of Parliament commenced amid noisy protests by Opposition parties.
The Opposition raised issues including alleged irregularities in Ram Mandir donations, examination paper leaks and the government’s ethanol blending policy. Speaker Om Birla appealed to Members of Parliament to maintain order and allow Question Hour to function smoothly.
The session, scheduled to continue until 13 August, is expected to witness intense debates on several economic and legislative matters that could influence market sentiment in the coming weeks.
Forex Reserves Continue to Strengthen
In a positive macroeconomic development, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reported that India’s foreign exchange reserves increased by $964 million during the week ended 10 July 2026, reaching $675.157 billion.
Foreign Currency Assets, the largest component of reserves, rose to $546.508 billion, while gold reserves increased marginally to $105.223 billion. India’s reserve position with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) also improved, reflecting continued external sector stability.
The robust reserve position provides an important cushion against external shocks, particularly at a time when global uncertainty remains elevated.
Bond Yields, Rupee and Commodities
Financial markets also tracked movements across currency, debt and commodity markets.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year Government Security edged higher to 6.782 per cent, reflecting cautious sentiment in the bond market.
The Indian rupee weakened slightly against the US dollar, trading around 96.45 per dollar, compared with its previous close of 96.305.
Gold prices remained firm as investors continued to seek safe-haven assets. MCX Gold futures for August delivery climbed 0.66 per cent to Rs 1,41,793 per 10 grams.
Meanwhile, the US Dollar Index (DXY) remained firm around 100.81, while the yield on the US 10-year Treasury rose to 4.556 per cent, reflecting expectations that interest rates in the United States may remain elevated.
International crude oil prices remained volatile amid the Middle East conflict. Brent crude traded near $88 per barrel, remaining at relatively elevated levels despite a marginal decline during the session.
Global Markets Mixed Amid Middle East Crisis
Global markets continued to remain cautious as geopolitical tensions in the Gulf intensified.
The conflict between the United States and Iran entered its ninth consecutive day, with fresh military strikes and retaliatory attacks keeping investors on edge. Reports of disruptions to shipping activity in the Strait of Hormuz also heightened concerns about global energy supplies.
The spike in oil prices has revived fears of persistent inflation globally, even though recent US inflation data showed some moderation.
Investors are now closely watching the US Federal Reserve’s policy outlook. Market expectations currently indicate a significant probability of another interest rate increase later this year, with futures markets assigning nearly a 60 per cent probability of a hike as early as September.
Higher US Treasury yields also reduced the relative attractiveness of equities, contributing to weakness across global stock markets.
Asian markets closed on a mixed note, while most European indices traded higher as investors balanced geopolitical concerns with expectations of improving corporate earnings.
US futures pointed to a positive opening, although Wall Street had closed lower on Friday following weakness in technology shares and disappointing reactions to several corporate earnings reports.
Earnings Drive Stock-Specific Action
Several individual companies witnessed sharp price movements following quarterly earnings announcements.
UltraTech Cement gained 1.48 per cent after reporting a 16.77 per cent increase in consolidated net profit and robust revenue growth.
Mahindra Logistics rose 2.49 per cent, returning to profitability after reporting strong revenue expansion.
Tatva Chintan Pharma Chem rallied 20 per cent after reporting a more than 140 per cent jump in quarterly net profit, driven by higher revenues and improved operating performance.
Bhansali Engineering Polymers climbed over 12 per cent after posting robust growth in both revenue and profitability, supported by improved realizations and better operating leverage.
Tips Music advanced 6.65 per cent after announcing that its board would consider a proposal to buy back equity shares along with approving first-quarter financial results on 22 July.
IPO Market Remains Strong
Primary market activity continued to attract strong investor participation.
The Caliber Mining and Logistics initial public offering (IPO) received an enthusiastic response, with the issue being subscribed 23.02 times by Monday afternoon.
Against an offer of 78.35 lakh shares, investors placed bids for over 18.04 crore shares, reflecting sustained appetite for quality public issues despite volatility in secondary markets.
The IPO, which opened on 17 July, will close on 21 July, with a price band of Rs 402–424 per share.
Outlook
Market analysts believe that investor attention will remain focused on the ongoing corporate earnings season, developments in the Middle East, crude oil prices and global central bank signals. While domestic macroeconomic indicators remain supportive, elevated geopolitical risks and expensive market valuations could keep volatility high in the near term.
The performance of banking stocks is likely to remain the key driver of benchmark indices over the coming sessions, while broader markets may continue to outperform if earnings from manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure and industrial companies remain robust.
