Domestic Market Overview: Range-Bound Action Narrows Nifty Below 24,000
BY Our Business Correspondent
Indian equity benchmarks experienced a subdued and range-bound trading session, closing virtually unchanged as investors adopted a cautious posture. Market participants weighed upbeat corporate earnings reports from select sector heavyweights against broader economic anxieties and impending global monetary policy directions.
The S&P BSE Sensex settled down by 69.86 points, or 0.09%, at 76,765.92. Similarly, the broader Nifty 50 index shed 10.60 points, or 0.04%, closing at 23,985.35 and slipping just below the crucial psychological milestone of the 24,000 mark.
Selling pressure was heavily concentrated in key heavyweights, preventing any aggressive upside movement. Major drags on the Nifty index included Hindustan Unilever, which plummeted 7.11%, alongside ICICI Bank (down 1.94%) and Reliance Industries (down 0.65%).
In the broader market segments, performance remained mixed. The BSE 150 MidCap Index managed to eke out marginal gains, rising 0.01%, whereas the BSE 250 SmallCap Index faced downward pressure, slipping 0.47%. Overall market breadth heavily favored the bears; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1,528 shares advanced while 2,740 shares declined, with 169 remaining unchanged. Meanwhile, the NSE’s India VIX—a primary indicator of expected near-term market volatility—softened by 0.77% to close at 12.56, indicating relatively subdued panic among traders despite the cautious undertone.
Key Macroeconomic Indicators and Commodities

Global Markets and International Developments
Wall Street futures pointed toward a positive opening session, with Dow Jones futures advancing 281 points. European markets traded higher, propped up by resilient corporate earnings reports from industrial and consumer staple enterprises, even as elevated global bond yields kept investors on edge.
In Asia, regional indices finished predominantly lower. South Korea’s Kospi slumped more than 10% as market participants braced for heavy-hitting quarterly earnings announcements from U.S. mega-cap technology firms, including Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft.
All eyes globally remain fixed on the U.S. Federal Reserve. The central bank is widely anticipated to maintain status quo on interest rates at the conclusion of its two-day policy meeting. Market participants will dissect Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s commentary for directional hints regarding monetary policy trajectories. CME FedWatch Tool indicators currently point toward expectations of a quarter-percentage-point rate adjustment in September.
Geopolitical developments also commanded attention. Diplomatic efforts continue to keep U.S.-Iran hostilities paused, while scheduled high-level meetings between U.S. leadership and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu focus on evolving security dynamics in the Middle East.
Spotlight on Sectors and Stocks
The Tech Surge: Nifty IT Index Rallies
The standout performer of the session was the technology sector. The Nifty IT index surged 3.32% to reach 30,418.35, compounding its stellar three-session winning streak to a 6.61% gain. This upward trajectory was catalyzed by a major foreign brokerage upgrading the Indian IT sector from “Underweight” to “Neutral” and adding Infosys to its core model portfolio.
- Coforge led the charge, skyrocketing 10.16% following an impressive quarterly performance. For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, the company posted a U.S. dollar revenue of $592.2 million—representing a 33.3% year-on-year and 21.1% quarter-on-quarter expansion. Consolidated net profit jumped 63.4% year-on-year to Rs 518.60 crore. Additionally, Coforge’s board granted in-principle approval to establish a corporate entity in China.
- Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) gained 4.46%, followed by Mphasis (up 3.57%), Tech Mahindra (up 3.49%), and Persistent Systems (up 3.22%). Infosys advanced 2.39%, while HCL Technologies and Wipro gained 1.93% and 1.41%, respectively.
FMCG and Consumer Goods Pressured
Consumer goods and beverage names faced severe headwinds following earnings disclosures:
- Hindustan Unilever tumbled 7.11% after reporting a 3.01% year-on-year contraction in consolidated net profit to Rs 2,673 crore for Q1 FY27, weighed down by escalating raw material costs.
- Varun Beverages fell 7.53% as EBITDA margins contracted by 76 basis points due to the integration of the lower-margin Twizza business in South Africa, overshadowing a 15.1% rise in net profit to Rs 1,525.36 crore.
- Godfrey Phillips India tanked 7.80% after net profit dropped 44.3% to Rs 198.39 crore.
Mixed Fortunes Across Corporates

- Om Infra rallied 4.78% after securing the lowest bidder (L1) status for a high-value infrastructure project commissioned by the Water Resources Department of Chhattisgarh.
- Tata Chemicals dropped 3.73%, recording a net loss of Rs 17 crore for the quarter, while Tejas Networks slipped 3.84% despite a near-doubling of operational revenues to Rs 402.16 crore.
Positive performers included:
- R R Kabel, which rose 2.36% after reporting a more than doubling of quarterly profit.
- Om Infra, which climbed 4.78% after emerging as the lowest bidder for a major irrigation infrastructure project in Chhattisgarh.
Stocks under pressure included:
- Godfrey Phillips India, down 7.80% following a sharp decline in quarterly earnings.
- Indoco Remedies, down 7.72% despite returning to profitability, as investor expectations appeared higher.
- Tata Chemicals, which fell 3.73% after reporting a quarterly loss.
- Tejas Networks, down 3.84%, despite nearly doubling revenue due to continued losses.
- Aurionpro Solutions, which declined 11.79% after weaker profit growth.
- Indus Towers, which slipped 1.73% despite posting stable quarterly earnings.
Outlook
Market participants believe Indian equities are likely to remain range-bound in the immediate term as investors digest a heavy earnings calendar alongside important global macroeconomic developments.
The trajectory of U.S. interest rates, movements in crude oil prices, foreign institutional investment flows and domestic corporate earnings are expected to determine market direction over the coming sessions.
While improving sentiment towards the IT sector has provided fresh leadership to the market, analysts caution that sustained gains would require broader participation from financials, consumer stocks and industrial companies.
