Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Assam Bioethanol Plant and laid the foundation stone for a Polypropylene Unit at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) in Golaghat, highlighting India’s push towards energy self-reliance.

Extending greetings for Sharodiya Durga Puja and paying tribute to Srimanta Sankardev, the Prime Minister said projects worth ₹18,000 crore have been rolled out for Assam, boosting opportunities for farmers and youth.

Modi underlined that the bamboo-based Bioethanol Plant would enhance green energy capacity while benefiting tribal communities and bamboo farmers. He said steady supply chains and chipping units would be created, adding that the project would generate annual spending of nearly ₹200 crore and directly impact thousands of lives.

The proposed Polypropylene Unit at NRL, he said, will strengthen India’s manufacturing base. Polypropylene, widely used in textiles, packaging, automobiles, and medical equipment, will help drive the “Make in Assam” and “Make in India” initiatives.

The Prime Minister also noted India’s strides in solar power and alternative fuels, stressing the need to reduce costly oil imports. He highlighted Assam’s growing role in the Semiconductor Mission, with a ₹27,000 crore plant under way in Morigaon.

Calling Assam a hub of trade, tourism, and cultural pride, Modi cited heritage projects like Rang Ghar’s restoration and the Maa Kamakhya Corridor. He criticised past neglect of the state and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to tribal and tea garden communities.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Hardeep Singh Puri, and other dignitaries attended the event.
