Muhurat trading is a tradition in the Indian stock market where, on the day of Diwali (or the day of Lakshmi Pūjā), the markets open for a short symbolic trading session. The word “muhurat” means “auspicious moment” in Sanskrit/Hindi. Investors and traders often execute small trades during this window believing that beginning their investments at this auspicious time will bring good fortune for the coming year.
Ahead of the festival of Diwali (Lakshmi Pūjā) in 2025, major stock exchanges have announced the schedule for the annual muhurat trading session — a symbolic, auspicious hour of share-market trading marking the start of the new Hindu financial year.
Notably, this year’s timing is a departure from the past: whereas muhurat trading often took place in the evening (after typical market hours), for 2025 the session has been scheduled in the afternoon (1:45 pm – 2:45 pm) rather than the evening slot.
According to official filings, the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will hold the special one-hour trading window on Tuesday, 21 October 2025, starting from 1:45 pm IST and ending at 2:45 pm IST.
In advance of the main session, a 15-minute pre-open session will be held from 1:30 pm to 1:45 pm. After the one-hour trading window, trade modification cut-off times and settlement obligations will apply as per the exchanges’ circulars.
Besides the muhurat window, the normal market remains closed on Diwali day for the wider session; the special window is a tradition that combines cultural symbolism with investment.
Why & what to keep in mind?
While the session is short (only one hour), all trades executed during the muhurat window are subject to normal settlement obligations just like across any other trading day.
From an investor perspective: the session is largely symbolic and stems from tradition rather than being a necessarily profitable strategy. Market participants may use this as an opportunity to make small, festive purchases, or begin long-term investments aligned with a new financial year mindset. 5paisa+1
Investors and traders planning to participate should mark 21 October 2025, 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm IST as the special one-hour muhurat trading session for the year. While the session carries cultural value and festive sentiment, standard trading discipline, research, and risk-management still apply.
