Adani Power has warned that it will suspend electricity supply to Bangladesh from November 11 unless the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) clears $496 million in outstanding payments by November 10.

The ultimatum came in a formal letter sent on October 31 by Adani Vice-Chairman Avinash Anurag, which said the company had not received any payments despite repeated reminders over the past several months.

“If all dues are not settled by November 10, we will suspend power supply from the next day,” the letter stated, invoking clauses from the 2017 Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed between Adani Power (Jharkhand) Ltd and the BPDB.

The warning follows an earlier appeal from Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani, who wrote directly to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus in September, noting that Bangladesh’s arrears had reached $464 million. Although the government released a partial payment, the company insists that the remaining dues are “critically high” and unsustainable.

Adani Power currently supplies electricity to Bangladesh from its Godda thermal power plant in Jharkhand, which was commissioned under a 25-year bilateral deal. Despite the threat of suspension, the company clarified that under the PPA, it would still be entitled to capacity payments— meaning Bangladesh must pay a fixed charge even if no electricity is supplied.

Energy experts warn that a suspension could severely disrupt Bangladesh’s already strained power grid, particularly as demand peaks during the dry season. A senior BPDB official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “We are in discussions to clear part of the dues. But the dollar shortage and rising import costs have made it difficult to settle the full amount immediately.”

The standoff comes amid growing criticism of expensive foreign power contracts signed under previous governments, which left Bangladesh locked into long-term payments despite falling domestic demand.
