India ‘s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, speaking at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, spotlighted growing global economic instability and underscored India’s commitment to strategic independence. He warned that tariff volatility and uncertain market access are reshaping global trade dynamics, making “de-risking” a pressing necessity—whether from limited supply chains or over-reliance on dominant markets.

Dr. Jaishankar noted that energy and food security have become early casualties of global conflict and disruption, especially since 2022. He criticized the disparity in global responses, pointing out that affluent nations secured resources while poorer ones struggled, often receiving moralistic lectures instead of meaningful support.

He pointed out that energy and food security have been the first casualties of conflict and disruption, especially since 2022. He said better-off societies insulated themselves by having the first call and resource-stressed ones scrambled to survive, only to hear sanctimonious lectures.

“Economic concerns have other dimensions as well. Heightened technology control is one. The grip on supply chains and critical minerals is another. The shaping of connectivity is no less sensitive. Protection of key sea lanes has become a challenge. Restricting the evolution of a global workplace is an issue’, he said.

Dr Jaishankar said India will always maintain its freedom of choice and will always be a voice of the Global South. He said that the nation remains determined to protect its people and secure their interests at home and abroad.

India’s Independent Path and Global Role

Reaffirming India’s sovereign stance, Dr. Jaishankar declared that the country will always maintain its freedom of choice and remain a steadfast voice for the Global South. He emphasized three guiding principles shaping India’s global engagement:

  • Atmanirbharta (Self-Reliance)
  • Atmaraksha (Self-Protection)
  • Atmavishwas (Self-Confidence)

These, he said, are the cornerstones of India’s approach to navigating today’s complex world.

Terrorism & UN Reform

Shifting focus to security, Dr. Jaishankar reiterated India’s long-standing challenge with terrorism, pointing to a neighboring country as the epicenter of global terror. He cited the April 2025 killing of tourists in Pahalgam and affirmed India’s right to defend its citizens and bring perpetrators to justice.

He called for deeper international cooperation against terrorism and criticized the UN’s resistance to reform, arguing that its credibility is eroding. India, he said, is ready to take on greater responsibilities in a reformed, more representative Security Council.
