Mata Sundri College for Women, University of Delhi, organised a two-day seminar “Bhasha Mein Loktantra – A Seminar-cum-Language Festival” on March 24–25, 2026. The programme focused on examining the role of language in a democratic society while also highlighting challenges related to preserving and sustaining linguistic diversity.
Principal, Prof. Harpreet Kaur, in her welcome address emphasised that, “all languages are equal, they should have representation, and their voices should be heard.” She also highlighted concerns regarding gender neutrality in language. The inaugural ceremony of the fest was graced by Chief Guest, Padma Vibhushan Dr. Sonal ManSingh.
Eminent speakers including Mr Madhav Kaushak, Prof. Renuka Singh, and Mr Rajshekhar Vyas discussed the impact of globalisation, consumerism, and technology on language and literature. They addressed concerns about the misuse of language in fostering communalism and reflected on its evolving nature across mediums like cinema. Prof. Rawail Singh concluded the session with his remarks.
The second session featured Prof. Manoj Dixit, Prof. Pankaj Kumar Mishra, Prof. Ravinder Singh, and Ms. Rumi Malik, who highlighted the need to decolonise language and strengthen indigenous and regional languages amid the growing dominance of English.
The second day got underway with a panel of guest speakers including Mr Ashok Vajpayi, Prof. Purushottam Agrawal, and Mr Priyadarshan who came forward with their views on the connection between language, democracy, and society. They emphasized how news is interpreted in modern times, focusing on media literacy and influencing democratic participation.
Thereafter, Prof. Manindra Nath Thakur, Prof. Surinder S. Jodhka and Prof. Peggy Mohan took the stage and observed the aspects of English language in educational systems alongside the need for recognition of regional languages reiterating the notions spoken before.
The next session saw the presence of Prof. Salil Mishra, Dr. Swarajbir and Prof. Sarabjit Singh who emphasised valuing regional languages with reference to their cultural and social context encouraging inclusive practices and well-informed understanding of the same.
The valedictory session succeeded at bringing the event to a close with thoughtful speeches by Prof. Niranjan Kumar and Dr. Priyaranjan Trivedi who recapitulated the enriching and enlightening discussions of the two days. Prof. Lokesh Kumar Gupta delivered the final vote of thanks recognising the efforts of all the staff and students involved. The event fostered meaningful dialogue on linguistic diversity, inclusivity, and the role of language in shaping democratic values.
