The Budget Session of Parliament began today with President Droupadi Murmu outlining the government’s economic priorities, placing strong emphasis on rural employment, domestic manufacturing, agricultural self-reliance and infrastructure-led growth as key drivers of a Viksit Bharat.
Addressing a joint sitting of both Houses, the President said the newly enacted Viksit Bharat G Ram G Act would give fresh momentum to rural development by guaranteeing 125 days of employment in villages, strengthening rural incomes while plugging corruption and leakages. She said the law would create new economic opportunities for farmers, livestock rearers and fishermen, reinforcing the rural economy.
Highlighting the economic impact of national security initiatives, President Murmu said India’s defence production crossed ₹1.5 lakh crore in 2025, while defence exports touched a record ₹23,000 crore. She noted that confidence in Made-in-India defence platforms has increased significantly, especially after Operation Sindoor, boosting India’s position as a global defence manufacturing hub.
On social development and poverty reduction, the President said 25 crore people have moved out of poverty over the past decade, reflecting the impact of targeted welfare delivery and economic inclusion. She added that social security coverage has expanded from 25 crore beneficiaries in 2014 to about 95 crore citizens today, creating a stronger safety net that supports consumption and economic stability.
President Murmu said government policies have led to record production of foodgrains and horticulture crops, while targeted interventions are underway to boost output in lagging segments. She stressed that national missions on edible oils, oilseeds and pulses aim to cut import dependence and move India towards agricultural self-reliance.
The President also underscored progress in infrastructure and energy, expressing confidence that India will achieve 500 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by the end of the decade. She said over 7,200 kilometres of national highways have been built in the North Eastern region in the last 11 years, improving connectivity, trade and access to remote areas.
Referring to governance reforms with economic implications, President Murmu said the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the updated Jan Vishwas Act, which has removed over 300 provisions from criminal offences, will improve ease of doing business and reduce compliance burdens.
She said 2026 marks a crucial base year for India’s long-term growth journey, adding that the government will continue to accelerate reforms to strengthen the economy, generate employment and ensure inclusive development.
The President expressed confidence that Parliament, the government and citizens together would realise the vision of Viksit Bharat, guided by national interest and constitutional values.
