SEBI Chairperson Tuhin Kanta Pandey Monday said that capital markets are increasingly emerging as a core avenue for household savings and wealth creation in India. Addressing the ICICI Securities -India Investor Conference 2026, Mr. Pandey informed that India has around 145 million investors in the securities market, growing at over 20% annually.
He further noted that mutual fund assets have surged from about Rs 12 lakh crore to over Rs 80 lakh crore over the years, adding that market capitalisation has grown from 69% of GDP a decade ago to about 128% today.
Mr. Pandey further informed that equity issuances touched 4.5 lakh crore rupees in FY26, while 366 IPOs raised around 1.9 lakh crore rupees during the year. He said that corporate bond issuances exceeded nine lakh crore rupees, underscoring the growing role of markets in capital formation.
At the regulatory level, Mr. Pandey said that SEBI’s approach remains one of optimum regulation that balances investor protection with ease of access and market development. Emphasising the centrality of investors to the market ecosystem, Mr. Pandey said every regulatory reform and market initiative must ultimately strengthen investor confidence.
The SEBI Chief said if the investor feels informed, protected and fairly treated, confidence will follow, participation will deepen, and markets will continue to grow on a strong and sustainable foundation.
Stating that India remains one of the fastest-growing major economies despite ongoing geopolitical developments affecting inflation, trade flows, exchange rates, and external balances, SEBI Chairman said India’s economic rise is not only about higher growth numbers but also about the formalisation of the economy, financialisation of savings and growing trust in institutions.
Mr. Pandey added that Indian capital markets are not merely reflecting India’s growth; they are enabling it by connecting household savings with enterprise and by converting economic momentum into investable assets.
