India recorded a sharp rise in cyber frauds linked to digital payments over the past four years, the Union Finance Ministry informed the Lok Sabha on Monday. Citing data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said banks and financial institutions reported 5,83,291 fraud cases between FY 2021-22 and FY 2025-26 (up to September 2025).
The total amount involved in these frauds stood at ₹3,588.22 crore, of which ₹238.83 crore has been recovered so far.
According to RBI’s data, credit cards and internet banking accounted for the bulk of the cases. Credit card frauds totalled 2.43 lakh cases involving ₹1,447.27 crore, while internet banking recorded 2.42 lakh cases, with losses amounting to ₹1,730.14 crore. Debit and ATM card frauds accounted for 94,991 cases, with an associated amount of ₹401.17 crore.
UPI-related frauds were significantly lower, at 457 cases involving ₹2.13 crore.
The Minister further clarified that financial frauds under the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) were earlier classified under internet banking but are being reported separately from November 2024. Under the new category, 1,346 Aadhaar-linked fraud cases amounting to ₹1.06 crore have been reported so far—366 cases in FY 2024-25 and 980 cases in FY 2025-26.
Chaudhary said the surge in digital transactions in recent years has been accompanied by a corresponding rise in fraud reporting.
