In response to certain media reports regarding the wheat production scenario for 2025-26, the Government has clarified that the wheat production remains mixed and resilient in the country, despite weather-related challenges in some regions. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, said that the wheat season has been supported by strong adaptive measures taken by farmers. It added that the crop was sown across an estimated over 33.4 million hectares, with no reported incidence of major insect pests or diseases during the season. Increased early and timely sowing also contributed to a rise in acreage compared to last year. However, the crop experienced heat stress due to unusually high temperatures in February, which reduced grain filling duration and yield. Untimely rainfall and hailstorms in some areas during maturity have also caused localized damage to grain quality and output.

There have been no yield losses due to pests or diseases, while weed infestation remained low. A significant increase in early sowing helped the crop escape terminal heat. Additionally, an expansion of over 0.6 million hectares under cultivation is expected to offset localized losses. The Ministry also highlighted that higher adoption of improved, climate-resilient and disease-resistant wheat varieties has strengthened the crop’s ability to withstand heat and other stresses. The government reiterated that while localized weather impacts have been observed, overall wheat production for 2025-26 remains stable, supported by increased area, improved farming practices, and better seed varieties.
