The 56th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council is being held today in New Delhi, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The two-day session is expected to take up crucial deliberations on India’s next-generation GST reforms.

At the core of the agenda are tax rate rationalisation, simplification of compliance procedures, and measures to ease the burden on small businesses and MSMEs. Officials have indicated that the reforms are aimed at making the GST framework more transparent, efficient, and citizen-friendly.

The meeting follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day address, in which he underlined the significant role GST has played in strengthening India’s economy. He had also signaled that the upcoming reforms will provide direct relief to farmers, middle-class families, and local vendors, with major announcements expected around Diwali, including reduced taxes on essential goods.

Government sources said the reform package will be built on three pillars — structural changes, rationalisation of rates, and improving ease of living. The Finance Ministry has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that GST evolves into a simple, stable, and transparent tax system, supporting the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat and boosting the country’s Ease of Doing Business rankings.

The Council is also expected to review recommendations put forward by the Group of Ministers (GoM) that met last month to finalise proposals for the reform roadmap. Stakeholders believe these decisions could mark a significant milestone in India’s indirect tax journey, enhancing both economic resilience and consumer welfare.
