Union Heavy Industries and Steel Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy on Friday visited HMT Machine Tools Limited at Kalamassery in Kerala and reviewed the company’s manufacturing capabilities, export operations and modernization plans.

During the visit, the Minister flagged off the export of an NH Series machine tool to South Africa, describing it as a significant achievement for India’s engineering and manufacturing sector. Officials informed him that HMT has been securing international orders for precision-engineered machine tools and industrial systems.

Kumaraswamy inspected the plant’s Machine Tool Division, Foundry Division and strategic manufacturing units, where he reviewed the production and testing of CNC systems, precision machine tools and indigenously developed Sonar Directing Gear systems used in Indian naval platforms.

The Minister said institutions like HMT continue to play an important role in strengthening India’s self-reliance in strategic sectors such as defence, railways, aerospace and heavy engineering.

He also held review meetings with officials of HMT, the Fluid Control Research Institute and Instrumentation Limited to discuss modernization, operational efficiency and future growth opportunities.

Kumaraswamy later interacted with labour union representatives and employees, assuring them that worker welfare and strengthening public sector enterprises remain key priorities of the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
