The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed serious concern over reported military strikes near Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant amid the ongoing regional conflict.
IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi warned that the situation could pose significant nuclear safety risks if the facility is damaged. In a statement, he noted that Bushehr is an operational nuclear power plant containing a large amount of nuclear material, and any strike affecting the plant could trigger a major radiological accident with consequences extending beyond Iran’s borders.
Grossi urged all parties involved in the conflict to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any actions that could endanger nuclear facilities. He also stressed the importance of adhering to the IAEA’s “seven pillars” framework designed to ensure nuclear safety and security during armed conflicts.
The warning comes as tensions in the region continue to escalate, raising international concerns about the safety of sensitive nuclear infrastructure in conflict zones.
