In a landmark move toward holistic healthcare, Union Minister for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, announced the commencement of the world’s first-ever clinical study to scientifically evaluate Ayurveda as an adjunct to standard Anti-Tuberculosis Treatment (ATT).
The collaborative initiative, undertaken by the Ministry of AYUSH and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), marks a significant shift in India’s strategy to eliminate Tuberculosis. Speaking at the launch in New Delhi, Dr. Singh emphasized that TB remains a challenge too complex to be handled by the medical community alone or governed solely by state policy.
“Tuberculosis is a serious challenge that requires a broader, collective effort. It needs active participation from families, civil society, NGOs, and social activists to be truly effective,” Dr. Singh stated.
A Multidisciplinary Approach
The study aims to examine how traditional Ayurvedic practices can support modern medicine in treating TB patients. Dr. Singh highlighted that this collaboration will transcend institutional boundaries, evolving into a multidisciplinary initiative. He further suggested that the outcomes of this study could be integrated with genomic research to create a more personalized and robust treatment protocol.
Focus on Quality of Life
Addressing the gathering, Union Minister of State for AYUSH, Prataprao Jadhav, underscored that the goal of TB care must extend beyond just eliminating the infection.
“The treatment of TB is not merely about clearing the bacteria; it is about ensuring the complete recovery of the patient,” Jadhav said. He noted that integrating Ayurveda with modern medicine emphasizes improved nutrition, faster physical recovery, and an overall better quality of life for those battling the disease.
Key Takeaways of the Study:
- Scientific Validation: The study will provide clinical evidence for Ayurveda’s role in supportive therapy.
- Faster Recovery: Focus on reducing the side effects of long-term ATT and boosting patient immunity.
- Holistic Integration: Combining ancient wisdom with cutting-edge biotechnology and genomics.
This initiative is seen as a major step toward India’s goal of a TB-Mukt Bharat, leveraging the country’s rich traditional heritage alongside modern scientific advancements.
