India to Give Its Iconic Tourist Spots a Global Makeover-Scheme Launched to Boost World-Class Tourism

AMN / NEW DELHI

In a major push to put India’s most iconic tourist destinations on the global map, the Ministry of Tourism has rolled out operational guidelines under its ambitious scheme — ‘Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment – Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale’ (SASCI).

From Local Gems to Global Icons

The scheme is not just about beautification — it’s a holistic plan to transform selected iconic destinations into world-class tourist hubs, complete with global branding, immersive experiences, and high-end infrastructure. Think of it as India’s version of creating “mini-Paris” or “next Bali,” but rooted in its unique cultural and historical identity.

According to the Tourism Ministry, the focus is on delivering an ‘end-to-end’ experience for tourists — from smooth arrival to immersive engagement and seamless exit. This includes everything from last-mile connectivity and digital integration to sustainable waste management and hospitality training.

What’s New in SASCI?

Under the new guidelines:

  • States will get central funding to develop and scale up key tourist centres.
  • Only proposals that meet strict criteria like connectivity, sustainability, carrying capacity, and marketing potential have been shortlisted.
  • Emphasis will be placed on design expertise, visitor comfort, and green operations.
  • The entire project must be completed within 2 years, with the central government providing financial support up to 31st March 2026.

This initiative isn’t a free-for-all: the projects were chosen based on rigorous evaluation of state government proposals and will be monitored through a structured institutional framework.

State-Led, Centre-Funded

While the state governments will lead the execution of these tourism upgrades, the central government is stepping in with the funds and framework. The Ministry has made it clear — this is a results-oriented scheme, and each project must demonstrate real value in terms of economic impact, global visibility, and improved tourist satisfaction.

Promoting India, the Global Way

Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha today, said that these revamped sites will also benefit from India’s international tourism marketing campaigns. This includes global outreach through social media, international expos, and curated travel platforms, in addition to domestic tourism promotion.

What This Means for You?

Whether you’re a tourist, travel blogger, entrepreneur, or simply a culture buff — this initiative promises fresher, cleaner, smarter and better-equipped destinations across India. Expect to see less crowding, better signage, smarter services, and immersive storytelling at heritage sites, spiritual circuits, scenic locations, and beyond.

From ancient forts and coastal getaways to Himalayan retreats and cultural corridors, India is now on a mission to offer not just travel — but world-class travel.
