India and the United States are moving steadily toward finalising a mutually beneficial trade agreement, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Friday, signalling fresh momentum in bilateral economic ties.

Addressing the media, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that an Indian delegation led by the chief negotiator will travel to Washington next week to carry forward discussions in line with the recently adopted joint statement between the two countries. The proposed pact is expected to address tariff structures and improve market access, strengthening trade cooperation between India and the United States.

Observer Role in Peace Efforts

On global diplomatic engagements, Mr Jaiswal stated that India recently attended the Board of Peace meeting in Washington DC as an observer. He added that New Delhi has welcomed efforts aimed at stabilising the situation in Gaza, including initiatives proposed by US President Donald Trump, as well as measures aligned with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

Clarifying India’s stand on a joint statement condemning Israeli expansion in the West Bank, the spokesperson said the document was not a negotiated text in the traditional UN framework. He reiterated India’s consistent position supporting a just and lasting peace in West Asia through dialogue and adherence to international law. India has also reaffirmed support for a sovereign and viable Palestinian state living side by side with Israel in peace.

Responding to a query on oil imports, the MEA indicated that India would consider purchasing crude oil from Venezuela if it proves commercially viable, underscoring that energy decisions remain guided by economic and strategic interests.

On regional developments, Mr Jaiswal said Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Bangladesh’s newly elected Prime Minister following the recent elections. He also noted that Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha, attended the swearing-in ceremony on February 17 and delivered a letter conveying India’s commitment to supporting a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh.

The briefing reflected India’s broad diplomatic canvas, balancing trade negotiations with global peace initiatives, energy strategy and neighbourhood outreach.
