The Indian Embassy in Washington, US has organised the annual Mango Festival in collaboration with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the Department of Commerce and the Dupont Circle Business Improvement District.

The event showcased popular Indian mango varieties, including Alphonso, Kesar, Dasheri, Langra and Banganapalli, attracting hundreds of visitors to Dupont Circle.

Hundreds of visitors queued up in Washington’s popular Dupont Circle yesterday to sample Indian mangoes at the annual Mango Festival, with many calling for wider availability of premium Indian varieties in the United States.

Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra said the festival has grown rapidly over the years and has become an annual attraction. India is the world’s largest producer of mangoes, with exports to the United States steadily increasing in recent years through APEDA and approved irradiation facilities.

Strategic Impact on Agricultural Exports

  • Trade Volume Expansion: India stands as the world’s largest producer of mangoes. This trade push is part of a concerted effort by APEDA to expand the market footprint of Indian fresh produce in high-realization Western markets.
  • Overcoming Phytosanitary Barriers: Indian Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, noted that the festival has institutionalized itself as an annual marketing attraction, adding that outbound shipments to the US have risen steadily due to improved supply chain logistics and compliant irradiation protocols.
  • Market Access: By directly engaging with business improvement districts and urban consumer hubs, the trade delegation aims to transition mango exports from niche diaspora stores to mass-market US retail chains.
