Domestic Benchmark equity indices, the Sensex and the Nifty, opened on a positive note but unable to hold gains, later ended lower after a range-bound trade today. The Sensex shed 148 points or 0.18 per cent to close at 83 thousand 311, while the Nifty dipped 88 points or 0.34 per cent to settle at 25 thousand 510. The broader market indices at the Bombay Stock Exchange closed in negative zone. The Mid-Cap index lost 1.2 per cent, and the Small-Cap index fell over one and half a per cent.
In the Sensex pack, 19 out of 30 companies edged downward. In the top laggards, Powergrid plunged over 3.1 per cent, Eternal dropped over 2.4 per cent and Bharat Electronics Limited fell almost 1.7 per cent. Among the top gainers, Asian Paints surged almost 4.8 per cent, Reliance added 1.6 per cent and Mahindra and Mahindra as well as Ultratech Cement increased one per cent.
Among the Sectoral indices at the BSE, 20 out of 21 sectors ended with losses. Among the top laggards, Utilities dipped 2.2 per cent, Metal lost two per cent, and Power slipped almost two per cent. In the gainers, Focused IT rose over 0.1 per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative as shares of 3,012 companies declined and shares of 1,202 companies advanced while shares of 139 companies remained unchanged.
