In a bid to prepare India for the evolving AI-driven future of work, NITI Aayog on Friday released a landmark report titled “Roadmap for Job Creation in the AI Economy.” The roadmap was unveiled by B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog, in the presence of Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, Department of School Education & Literacy; Vineet Joshi, Secretary, Department of Higher Education; and Debjani Ghosh, Distinguished Fellow, NITI Aayog, among other dignitaries.
The roadmap analyses how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming India’s tech services landscape through the lens of work, worker, and workforce. While acknowledging the potential for job displacement by 2031, it also highlights a major opportunity—up to 4 million new AI-enabled jobs could be created within the next five years if India adopts a coordinated national approach.
To achieve this, NITI Aayog has proposed the launch of a National AI Talent Mission—a flagship, mission-mode initiative aimed at positioning India as the AI workforce capital of the world.
“India’s strength lies in its people. With over nine million professionals in technology and customer experience sectors, and the world’s largest pool of young digital talent, we have both the scale and ambition. What we need now is urgency, vision, and coordination,” said B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, CEO, NITI Aayog.
Debjani Ghosh, Distinguished Fellow at NITI Aayog, emphasized that India’s choices today will determine whether AI becomes a driver of job loss or job creation. “This roadmap provides a clear, actionable path to ensure India becomes the global epicentre of AI talent by 2035,” she said.
The roadmap rests on three key pillars:
1. AI Literacy and Education Reform – Embedding AI as a foundational skill across schools, universities, and vocational programs.
2. National Reskilling Engine – Enabling large-scale upskilling and reskilling of technology and customer experience professionals for AI-augmented roles.
3. Global AI Talent Magnet – Retaining Indian talent, attracting global experts, and establishing India as the world’s leading AI skilling destination.
The report also calls for strong collaboration between the proposed India AI Talent Mission and the ongoing India AI Mission, alongside deeper partnerships between academia, industry, and government to build the necessary infrastructure, data ecosystems, and research capabilities for an AI-ready economy.
Developed by NITI Aayog’s Frontier Tech Hub, in collaboration with NASSCOM and Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and guided by an Expert Council featuring leaders from IBM, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, LTIMindtree, and Teleperformance, the roadmap lays out a comprehensive blueprint for India’s leadership in the global AI economy by 2035.
The launch event saw wide participation from industry stakeholders, academic experts, and development partners, reflecting a shared commitment to accelerating India’s transition into an AI-powered, future-ready workforce.
