GHAZIABAD / NEW DELHI — In a major boost to the country’s quality assurance infrastructure, the National Test House (NTH) of the Northern Region in Ghaziabad has established a state-of-the-art Shoe Testing Laboratory.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, the newly upgraded facility will significantly enhance NTH’s capability to provide comprehensive, reliable, and high-precision footwear testing services. The facility is poised to serve a wide spectrum of stakeholders, including MSMEs, domestic manufacturers, exporters, consumers, and regulatory authorities across India.
Advanced Capabilities and Quality Standards
Operating under the Department of Consumer Affairs, the laboratory is equipped with cutting-edge testing instruments and modern infrastructure designed to evaluate products in strict accordance with Indian Standards (IS).
The facility is fully geared to conduct rigorous quality compliance testing across diverse footwear segments:
- Industrial & Safety: Specialized testing for heavy-duty and industrial safety shoes.
- Institutional Footwear: Standardized quality evaluation for school shoes.
- Commercial Goods: Precision testing for premium leather footwear and everyday consumer variants.
Strategic Location to Reduce Logistics Costs
Situated in Ghaziabad, the laboratory enjoys a massive geographical advantage due to its close proximity to Northern India’s primary footwear manufacturing hubs, including Delhi-NCR, Kanpur, and Agra.
Industry Impact: By bringing advanced testing closer to these major production clusters, the facility will dramatically reduce sample transit times, slash logistical expenditures for businesses, and improve overall ease of doing business for regional MSMEs.
| Feature | Dynamic Benefit to Industry |
| Proximity to Clusters | Rapid turnaround times for sample testing and certifications. |
| Advanced Instrumentation | High-precision data complying with global and national benchmarks. |
| MSME Accessibility | Reduced testing and logistics costs for smaller manufacturers. |
Driving ‘Make in India’ and ‘Viksit Bharat’
The Ministry emphasized that this technological upgrade is not just a localized improvement, but a structural step forward that aligns closely with the vision of Viksit Bharat and the core objectives of the Make in India mission.
By fostering a robust, highly reliable quality assurance ecosystem, the new laboratory is expected to strengthen India’s manufacturing competitiveness on the global stage, promote self-reliance, and ensure that Indian-made footwear meets world-class safety and durability metrics.
