In a major relief for India’s energy security amid rising tensions in West Asia, Iran has indicated that commercial shipping from friendly countries, including India, will be allowed to pass through the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz.

According to Seyed Abbas Araghchi, the Foreign Minister of Iran, the waterway will remain open for nations that maintain friendly relations with Tehran, such as India, China and Russia, ensuring the continuation of commercial shipping despite the tense security situation in the region.

Araghchi said vessels linked to Iran’s adversaries may face restrictions, as the region is currently witnessing heightened military tensions. “This is effectively a war zone, and there is no reason to allow enemy vessels or their allies to pass through,” he said, while clarifying that trade routes will remain accessible to friendly countries.

For India, the development is particularly significant because the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil transit chokepoints. A large portion of India’s crude oil imports from West Asian producers passes through this narrow shipping corridor connecting the Persian Gulf to global markets.

Energy analysts say Iran’s assurance could help stabilise supply concerns for India and other Asian economies heavily dependent on oil shipments through the route. However, they also caution that any escalation of conflict in the region could still disrupt global energy markets and push up crude prices.

India has been closely monitoring developments in the Gulf region, as volatility around the Strait of Hormuz has historically triggered sharp movements in oil prices and freight costs, affecting domestic fuel prices and the broader economy.
