US Senator Steve Daines has met Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu in Beijing amid escalating trade friction between the two countries.

China’s foreign ministry said the two sides exchanged views on China-US relations and issues of mutual concern on Friday.

The administration of US President Donald Trump imposed additional tariffs on imports from China in February and March, citing an influx of fentanyl and other drugs into the US as reasons for the levies. Beijing hit back with its own additional duties.

The US Embassy in Beijing had said earlier that Daines would discuss the flow of drugs into the US and fair trade, among other issues, with the Chinese side.

It remains to be seen whether the senator’s visit to China will help de-escalate the trade friction between the two countries.
