All three Indian seafarers who were initially reported missing after the tragic incident aboard the commercial vessel Palau-flagged MT Settebello have now been confirmed dead. The tanker was hit off the coast of Oman in a suspected US missile strike. In a social media post, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said bodies of three seafarers have been located and identified.
Mr Sonowal expressed grief over the tragic incident and described it as a profound loss to the maritime community. He said that the Government stands firmly with the bereaved families during this difficult time. He assured that all necessary support would be extended to the next of kin of the deceased.
The Minister further stated that he has directed officials to ensure the immediate repatriation of the rescued crew members and the swift return of the mortal remains of the deceased to India for their final rites.
MEA summons US Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks after attack on commercial vessel off Oman coast
External Affairs Ministry yesterday summoned Chargé d’Affaires of the US, Jason Meeks following attack on commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman. In a statement, the External Affairs Ministry has condemned the attack on the commercial vessel. Of the 24 Indian crew onboard, 21 Indians have been rescued so far, and three Indians are reportedly missing.
New Delhi expressed concern at the continuing incidents of attacks on shipping in the region, calling them deeply worrisome and a direct result of the ongoing conflict in the region. India reiterated the call for immediate de-escalation of tensions and the conclusion of ongoing negotiations for a diplomatic solution so that peace and stability can return to the region. It said the targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region must end. India called for the restoration of free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the international waterways in the region, in keeping with international law at the earliest
