Maharashtra has received only 26 per cent of its normal rainfall during the first half of June, prompting the state government to advise farmers against rushing with sowing operations.

According to a crop situation review presented before the state Cabinet today, Maharashtra recorded 27.4 millimetres of rainfall against the normal average of 103.8 millimetres between the 1st and 15th of June.

The review noted that rainfall activity is expected to remain scattered over the Konkan region and parts of central Maharashtra in the coming days. However, Vidarbha and Marathwada are likely to receive improved rainfall from the 18th of June onwards.

Expressing concern over the delayed monsoon and declining water stocks, the Cabinet stressed the need for judicious use of available water resources. The state government has also urged farmers to take rainfall conditions into account before undertaking sowing activities.
