Professor Chetan Singh Solanki, known as India’s “Solar Man” and “Solar Gandhi,” has resigned from his post at IIT Bombay to dedicate himself fully to saving humanity from climate change.
In a drastic and inspiring move, Professor Chetan Singh Solanki, a renowned solar scientist often called India’s “Solar Man” or “Solar Gandhi,” has resigned from his position at IIT Bombay to devote his life to fighting climate change. After two decades of pioneering solar energy research and education, he believes awareness is no longer enough—it’s time for action.

Professor Solanki’s journey began with the “Energy Swaraj Yatra” in 2020, a solar-powered bus expedition aimed at raising climate awareness. He has traveled over 68,000 km, giving more than 1,650 lectures and living on the bus for 11 years to demonstrate his commitment.
He emphasizes that we face a “now or never” situation, a climate emergency where humanity’s very existence is at risk. He argues for a fundamental shift in our thinking, promoting the “Finite Earth – Finite Consumption” mantra. To this end, he has launched the “Finite Earth Movement” with the ambitious goal of engaging one billion people in climate action within the next three years. His resignation, he says, is not a career change but a “call to duty,” prioritizing his purpose over prestige. He urges people, institutions, and governments worldwide to join this movement to save the planet.
Prof. Solanki has started the Finite Earth Movement (FEM), which is based on the simple truth that “On a finite planet, unlimited consumption is not possible.” His goal is to engage about one billion people in climate action in just the next three years through FEM. “My resignation is not just a career change, but a call to duty,” he said. “IIT Bombay gave me prestige, but now FEM is the seed of purpose.”
23 October 2025 will be Prof. Solanki’s last working day at IIT Bombay. He called on citizens, institutions and governments across the world to join the Finite Earth Movement and make finite living not just a national but an international mission, as climate change is a problem of entire humanity.
