A R DAS / NEW DELHI

— In a major boost to India’s premium agricultural export pipeline, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has successfully facilitated the first-ever commercial export of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Rewa Sundarja Mangoes from Madhya Pradesh to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the inaugural consignment comprised one metric tonne of the premium-quality fruit, marking a critical milestone in New Delhi’s strategy to scale up high-value agro-exports to the Middle East.

Economic & Market Impact

  • Boost for Regional Agro-Economy: This commercial breakthrough is projected to deliver immediate economic benefits to mango growers across the Rewa region of Madhya Pradesh by opening up a high-paying international market.
  • The GI Advantage: This shipment underscores the commercial leverage of Geographical Indication (GI) registration. By establishing a distinct, counterfeiting-resistant regional identity, Indian exporters are successfully commanding premium pricing in competitive global markets.
  • Strategic Market Expansion: The move aligns with India’s broader trade push to diversify its agricultural export basket beyond bulk commodities into premium, origin-certified produce for affluent Gulf markets.
