Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy Friday said commercial vessels transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz must use routes approved by Tehran, despite the establishment despite the IRGC establishing a communication line with the US Central Command (CENTCOM). Iranian state media reported the IRGC warned that navigation outside designated routes would not be permitted and claimed three foreign oil tankers attempting to illegally transit the Strait of Hormuz and use the Southern Corridor were stopped and diverted towards the Persian Gulf. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said safe passage through the waterway could not be guaranteed without coordination with Tehran warning that parallel routes not approved by Tehran could be suspended.

The communication line was established after US-Iran talks in Switzerland signed the 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on June 17, which also set a 60-day timeline for negotiating a final agreement.
