Bangladesh’s power situation is expected to improve as the inoperative unit of India’s Jharkhand-based Adani power plant is set to resume operations by April 26, while several other coal-fired plants are likely to raise output by early May, a Power Division official said on Thursday.

“Adani may resume operations by April 26, SS Power by April 28, and RNPL by the first week of May,” Power Division joint secretary Umme Rehana said during a briefing. She said the government was expecting 1,982MW from coal by the first week of May.

Bangladesh is currently facing a fuel crisis, including shortages of coal, gas and furnace oil. Several coal-fired plants are operating at around half their capacity, including India’s Adani Power, Chattogram’s SS Power and Patuakhali’s RNPL.

Of these, Adani’s output fell due to technical glitches, while the others saw lower generation because of coal shortages. Adani’s production had dropped since 2 am on Wednesday.

Bangladesh’s national power generation stood at 14,190MW as of 12 noon on Thursday against a demand of 15,902MW.
