The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a branch manager of Bank of Baroda along with a bank agent (Bank Mitra) in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur Dehat district for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe in connection with the processing of subsidy-related documents.

The accused have been identified as Gaurav Verma, Branch Manager of Bank of Baroda’s Nonari Bujurg branch, and Raghvendra, a tout working as a Bank Mitra at the same branch.

According to the CBI, the case was registered on June 3, 2026, following a complaint from a borrower who had availed a loan of ₹10 lakh under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) in December 2023. The loan was sanctioned for setting up a solar-powered flour mill.

After completing the mandatory period, the complainant approached the bank to obtain necessary documents required to claim interest subsidy benefits under the Pt. Deendayal Gramodyog Rojgar Yojana. While he had already received the first installment of the subsidy, he needed additional documentation from the bank to process subsequent claims.

The complaint alleged that when the borrower contacted the branch manager for these documents, Verma demanded a bribe of ₹25,000 through the Bank Mitra. It was further alleged that the manager threatened to withhold the required documents if the payment was not made.

Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap on June 4, 2026. During the operation, the Bank Mitra was caught red-handed while accepting ₹15,000 from the complainant on behalf of the branch manager.

Following the trap, both the branch manager and the intermediary were taken into custody. The accused are expected to be produced before the competent court in Lucknow.

The investigation into the matter is currently underway, and officials are examining whether similar demands were made from other beneficiaries at the branch.

The case highlights ongoing concerns over corruption in the implementation of government-backed credit and subsidy schemes, particularly those aimed at promoting rural entrepreneurship and self-employment.
