The reappointment of Prof. Yogesh Singh as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi (DU) for a second consecutive full term marks a historic milestone in the University’s history. For the first time since its establishment, a Vice-Chancellor has been entrusted with a consecutive second term.
Welcoming the decision, the Delhi University Progressive Teachers’ Association (DUPTA) described it as a visionary and historic step in the larger interest of the University and India’s higher education system.
An online meeting of the Association was chaired by Prof. Satyapal Singh, Senior Professor of Sanskrit, who joined from Mauritius. In his presidential address, he said that the Government of India’s decision reflects its commitment to recognizing merit, integrity, and visionary leadership. According to him, under the leadership of Prof. Yogesh Singh, Delhi University has earned a distinct national and international reputation.
Addressing the meeting, Department of Political Science Prof. Sudhir Kumar Singh, General Secretary of DUPTA, stated that during the past five years, Delhi University has witnessed remarkable progress in academics, administration, and infrastructure under Prof. Yogesh Singh’s leadership. He noted that nearly 6,000 faculty members were recruited through a transparent and merit-based process, while significant administrative reforms, large-scale infrastructure development, and a disciplined work culture have contributed to an impressive improvement of nearly 200 positions in global university rankings.
Prof. Sudhir Singh expressed confidence that, with his deep understanding of the University’s challenges and opportunities, Prof. Yogesh Singh would transform Delhi University during his second term and lead it into the league of the world’s top 100 universities within the next five years. He also observed that the University maintained a harmonious academic environment throughout the Vice-Chancellor’s first tenure, without any major protests or disruptions.
Prof. B.K. Singh, Vice-President of the Association and Professor in the Department of Chemistry, said that the Government’s decision is highly encouraging for the academic community. It sends a strong message that honesty, dedication, and excellence in academic leadership receive due recognition.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Chandramohan Negi from the South Campus remarked that the grant of a second consecutive term to a Vice-Chancellor for the first time in the University’s history reflects Prof. Yogesh Singh’s impartial, committed, and development-oriented leadership.
The speakers also highlighted Prof. Yogesh Singh’s distinguished academic achievements. He holds an M.Tech. in Electronics and Communication Engineering and a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering. A renowned academic in Software Engineering, he has supervised 23 doctoral scholars, published more than 250 research papers in national and international journals, and authored and co-authored several books, including one on Software Testing. He has also held several key academic and administrative positions during his distinguished career.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Dr. Rupesh Chauhan of Kirori Mal College said that Prof. Yogesh Singh’s second term would mark the beginning of a new golden chapter in the history of Delhi University.
The online meeting witnessed the participation of a large number of Delhi University teachers joining from different parts of India and abroad.
