US entrepreneur Elon Musk has cast doubt on the large-scale artificial intelligence AI project announced by US President Donald Trump.

Trump unveiled the plan of a joint venture dubbed Stargate on Tuesday that involves SoftBank Group, OpenAI and Oracle. He said the venture will invest 500 billion dollars over the next four years to build AI infrastructure in the US.

Musk said on X, “They don’t actually have the money.” He also commented that he heard from a credible source that SoftBank has well under 10 billion dollars secured.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reacted sharply, saying Musk’s remarks are wrong and the project is great for the US. He added that even though what is great for the country isn’t always best for Musk’s companies, and he hopes he will put America first.

Musk and Altman were both involved in the foundation of OpenAI. But they disagreed over the firm’s operation. Musk left OpenAI and set up a rival company.
