Geneva, June 5
On the occasion of World Environment Day, India organised a special event titled “Showcase of India’s Carbon Credit Trading Scheme and Standardisation in Renewable Energy” during the WTO Trade and Environment Week 2026. The Commerce Ministry said the programme highlighted India’s clean energy transition, climate commitments and policy frameworks for a low‑carbon economy.
Senior officials from the Environment Ministry, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Power Ministry and New & Renewable Energy Ministry presented India’s achievements under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The country has already surpassed key targets: non‑fossil fuel capacity reached 53.21% by March 2026, five years ahead of the 2030 goal, while emissions intensity of GDP dropped 37.38% between 2005 and 2022, exceeding the pledged 33–35% reduction.
The event also showcased India’s evolving carbon market architecture under the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), which aims to establish a national electronic trading platform. Progress under the National Green Hydrogen Mission was presented, with standards defining “Green Hydrogen” to ensure transparency and credibility for producers and investors.
Earlier, India and Japan held discussions on transparency and trade‑restrictive measures, examining challenges posed by climate‑related trade rules.
The WTO Trade and Environment Week provided India an opportunity to share its domestic initiatives and regulatory frameworks with the global community, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable and inclusive pathways for addressing climate change.
