Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi has said that there will be “no technical talks” with the United States have been scheduled in Doha this week, refuting media reports that working groups established under the recently-signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Tehran and Washington were set to meet in the Qatari capital.
Gharibabadi, who is a senior member of Iran’s negotiating team, told reporters that media reports about imminent technical discussions in Doha “are not confirmed”.
“Holding technical meetings of the working groups have not been scheduled for this week,” he said.
He added that consultations with Qatar are continuing, including efforts to follow up on the implementation of the opposite side’s commitments under the Islamabad MoU.
“The first round of technical talks within the framework of the designated working groups will be held once conditions are met and after agreement is reached on the date and venue,” the Iranian diplomat emphasized.
He noted that consultations on the issue are continuing through mediator countries.
Gharibabadi’s remarks follow reports from several US media outlets that representatives from both sides had agreed to hold consultations in Doha on Tuesday to resolve their differences, including on the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump said in a post on Truth Social that the two sides would meet Tuesday in Doha.
On July 17, Iran and the US signed the 14-point Pakistan-brokered MoU, which calls for a permanent end to hostilities across all fronts, including Lebanon, as well as the removal of the naval blockade on Iran within 30 days, and the restoration of commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Under the MoU, the two sides have entered a 60-day negotiation period, with the goal of reaching a comprehensive final agreement.
