Bangladesh and United States on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on strategic cooperation in the energy sector during a ceremony at the US Department of Energy in Washington, DC, in a move described by Washington as a historic step in bilateral ties.
The agreement was signed by energy secretary Chris Wright on behalf of the US and foreign minister Khalilur Rahman for Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Washington said the deal comes at a time when several countries, including Bangladesh, are facing growing energy security challenges amid ongoing conflict in the Middle East. It said the MoU would support Bangladesh’s long-term energy security by diversifying energy sources and strengthening supply-chain sustainability.
The agreement also covers cooperation in oil, gas, geothermal and bioenergy, along with knowledge exchange, capacity building and potential imports of US LNG, LPG and other energy products at affordable prices.
Calling the deal “another milestone in the growing Bangladesh-US relationship,” Khalilur thanked Tarique Rahman and Donald Trump for backing the initiative. Wright termed it a “historic development in the Bangladesh-US ties.”
