India and Vietnam have agreed to deepen cooperation at both government and business levels to expand bilateral trade, investment, and technological collaboration. The decision came during talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Vietnamese President To Lam in New Delhi.
Briefing the media after the meeting, Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs, P. Kumaran, said the two leaders held wide-ranging discussions covering the full spectrum of bilateral relations, while also exchanging views on key regional and global issues.
Both sides agreed to improve market access, including for agricultural products, and explore ways to create a more business-friendly regulatory environment. This includes easing compliance standards and certification processes to facilitate smoother operations for companies in both countries.
Recognising the strengths of India’s pharmaceutical sector, the two nations discussed potential opportunities for Indian firms to participate in supplying medicines to Vietnam’s public healthcare system starting from 2027.
The leaders also emphasised enhancing cooperation in knowledge-sharing, research, and institutional partnerships. Defence and security were reaffirmed as central pillars of the India-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with both sides agreeing to strengthen defence procurement ties.
In addition, the two countries committed to expanding collaboration in legal and judicial fields through effective implementation of an existing memorandum of understanding between their respective ministries.
Both leaders underscored that stronger India-Vietnam ties will deliver mutual benefits and support their broader national development goals.
