The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of systematically engineering splits in opposition parties to consolidate its political dominance, alleging that the ruling party is pursuing a strategy aimed at securing a two-thirds majority in Parliament to advance its legislative agenda.
In a communiqué issued after a two-day meeting of its Polit Bureau held on June 26-27, the CPI(M) claimed that the BJP’s “Operation Lotus” had been extended beyond Maharashtra and Delhi to include the Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), while alleging that the Samajwadi Party could be the next target. The Left party said such political manoeuvres undermine democratic institutions and weaken anti-defection safeguards.
The Polit Bureau also announced a nationwide campaign demanding electoral reforms, accusing the Election Commission of India (ECI) of compromising its constitutional role. It alleged that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls had led to the deletion of nearly six crore voters across several states and called for greater transparency in the electoral process.
Raising concerns over citizenship-related issues, the CPI(M) criticised the Ministry of External Affairs’ reported position that a passport alone does not constitute proof of citizenship. The party alleged that the move, coupled with electoral roll revisions, could adversely affect vulnerable sections of society and demanded restoration of deleted voter names and a clear clarification on the legal validity of official identity documents.
The Left party also targeted the Union government over the conduct of competitive examinations, citing alleged irregularities in NEET, CBSE evaluations and CUET. It accused the National Testing Agency (NTA) of repeated failures, backed students demanding structural reforms, and called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
On corruption, the CPI(M) alleged that the BJP government’s claims of maintaining a zero-tolerance policy had been contradicted by recent reports of alleged financial irregularities linked to the Ram Temple trust and allegations involving a Union Minister of State for Agriculture. The party demanded impartial investigations into all such cases irrespective of the individuals involved.
Commenting on international developments, the Polit Bureau expressed concern over continued tensions in West Asia, stating that the recent US-Iran understanding remained fragile due to ongoing Israeli military operations in Lebanon. It also urged the Centre to reduce fuel prices in line with declining global crude oil prices and ensure adequate availability of fertilisers, particularly urea, for farmers.
The CPI(M) said its Central Committee will meet in New Delhi from July 11 to 13 to discuss the political situation and organisational matters.
