Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced that the next-generation GST reforms will roll out from tomorrow, coinciding with the first day of Navratri. Addressing the nation, he said the “GST Bachat Utsav” will begin tomorrow, enabling citizens to purchase goods at reduced prices. The Prime Minister stressed that these reforms will transform India’s growth story and benefit youth, farmers, women, shopkeepers, traders, and entrepreneurs alike.
Mr. Modi recalled the earlier era when citizens and traders were trapped in a maze of taxes such as Octroi, Entry Tax, Sales Tax, Excise, VAT, and Service Tax. Goods movement across cities was a cumbersome process, requiring multiple checkpoints and forms. He said that his government prioritized GST reforms after 2014, consulting states and stakeholders, and replaced dozens of levies with a “One Nation, One Tax” system.
Under the new structure, only 5% and 18% tax slabs will remain. Essential items, medicines, and health insurance fall under the lower slab, ensuring affordability. He added that the reforms have brought a “double bonanza” for the poor and the middle class—income up to ₹12 lakh is now tax-free, and goods like appliances, vehicles, and even hotel stays will become cheaper.
The Prime Minister appreciated shopkeepers for passing on GST benefits to customers, with many displaying price comparisons before and after reforms. He underlined that the government is guided by the mantra “Nagrik Devo Bhavah” and is committed to boosting domestic manufacturing.
Mr. Modi urged every household to embrace Swadeshi products and every shop to promote indigenous goods. He appealed to states to actively support the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, affirming that when the Centre and states move forward together, the dream of a self-reliant India will be realized.
