Iran Rejects Talks Under Pressure as Conflict Toll Mounts; US Signals No Immediate Ceasefire

Iran has taken a firm stance against negotiating under coercion, with Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf declaring that Tehran will not engage in talks “under the shadow of threats.” In a social media post, he indicated that the Islamic Republic is preparing to unveil “new cards on the battlefield,” suggesting a potential escalation in strategy.

Amid growing tensions, Iranian state television issued an alert denying reports that any delegation from Tehran had visited Islamabad. The clarification points to internal deliberations within Iran’s leadership as it considers its response to the recent seizure of an Iranian container ship by the United States Navy. Notably, Ghalibaf had previously led Iran’s negotiating team in similar engagements.

On the other side, Donald Trump has delivered mixed signals regarding the trajectory of the conflict. While indicating that diplomatic channels remain open, he stated that there is no urgency to conclude the war. Trump also suggested that Vice President JD Vance could head a US delegation for potential talks, but expressed strong reluctance to extend the current ceasefire beyond its scheduled expiry.

The ongoing conflict has exacted a heavy human toll. Since the outbreak of hostilities, at least 3,375 people have been killed in Iran and over 2,290 in Lebanon. Casualties also include 23 deaths in Israel and more than a dozen across Gulf Arab states. Military losses have been significant, with 15 Israeli soldiers killed in Lebanon and 13 US service members losing their lives across the region.

As diplomatic uncertainty persists, the situation remains volatile, with both sides balancing military escalation against the possibility of negotiations.
