In a major move to protect consumers from deceptive packaging and price confusion, the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has mandated standard pack sizes for major edible oils.
The Department of Consumer Affairs amended the Legal Metrology framework’s standard operating procedure, which governs net quantity and pack sizes for edible oils and fats. Under the revised rules, ten major edible oils—including palm, palmolein, soyabean, sunflower, mustard, groundnut, sesame, rice bran, cotton seed, and corn oil—must now be sold only in prescribed quantities.
Approved Standard Pack Sizes:
- Small/Retail: 200 g and 500 g
- Medium/Household: 1 kg to 5 kg
- Bulk/Commercial: 15 kg and 20 kg
Why this matters: The market has recently seen a proliferation of odd, varying package sizes (such as 850 ml or 910 g), which makes it incredibly difficult for everyday shoppers to accurately compare prices and make informed decisions.
By enforcing these uniform sizes, the government aims to bring transparency to the marketplace. The Ministry noted that the initiative will not only empower consumers but will also benefit the edible oil industry by streamlining packaging practices across the country.
