External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar today met with European Union Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation Ekaterina Zaharieva in Brussels, Belgium. In a social media post, Dr Jaishankar said that during the meeting, they discussed opportunities for research in clean and green energy technologies. He added that they also exchanged views on innovation hubs, startups and association with Horizon Europe.  

During his two-day official visit to Belgium, Dr Jaishankar also co-chaired the inaugural India-Belgium Strategic Dialogue in Brussels with Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Prévot. The discussions in the dialogue focused on expanding bilateral ties and accelerating India-EU cooperation. He noted that deliberations reflected the ambition of India’s ties with Belgium, and the European Union. He noted that during the meeting they reviewed cooperation in political, economic, investments, clean energy, defence, mobility and pharmaceutical domains. The Meeting further followed discussions on exploring avenues of opportunities in ports, maritime, semiconductors as well as broader cooperation for supply chain de-risking. Two Sides also exchanged their perspectives on global developments, including in West Asia.

India-Belgium Strategic Dialogue: A New Milestone

Dr. Jaishankar co-chaired the inaugural India-Belgium Strategic Dialogue in Brussels alongside Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maxime Prévot. This new forum marks an ambitious step in elevating bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic level.

The dialogue served as a comprehensive review of the India-Belgium and wider India-EU partnership, focusing on:

  • Core Sectors: Deepening engagement in defense, pharmaceuticals, clean energy, and investment.
  • Strategic Domains: Exploring new frontiers in semiconductors, maritime connectivity, and port development.
  • Economic Security: Aligning on strategies for supply chain de-risking.
  • Global Geopolitics: Exchanging perspectives on pressing regional challenges, including the current situation in West Asia.

Earlier in the morning, Dr Jaishankar also met European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkela. Both leaders had discussions on advancing cooperation in connectivity, trilateral partnerships, IMEC and green shipping between the two nations.
