Petrol and diesel prices were increased once again on Friday, marking the third fuel price hike within less than ten days amid rising global crude oil prices and growing geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
In Delhi, petrol prices rose by 87 paise per litre to reach ₹99.51, while diesel prices climbed by 91 paise to ₹92.49 per litre. Oil companies attributed the latest revision to the continued surge in international crude prices following the Iran conflict and supply concerns linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route.
The latest increase follows a ₹3 per litre hike announced on May 15 and another 90 paise rise on May 19. With Friday’s revision, fuel prices have increased by nearly ₹5 per litre over the past few days, putting additional pressure on transport costs and household budgets.
Industry observers say uncertainty in the global energy market has intensified after fears of supply disruptions from the Gulf region pushed crude prices sharply upward. India, which imports a major share of its crude oil requirements, remains vulnerable to fluctuations in international oil markets.
Transporters and small businesses have expressed concern over the repeated hikes, warning that rising fuel costs could further increase inflationary pressures and lead to higher prices of essential commodities.
