AMN / BIZ DESK
Domestic equity benchmarks ended a choppy session slightly in the red on Monday, retreating modestly from recent gains as profit-booking in banking and media counters offset strong buying interest in metal stocks. Despite the headline indices finishing lower, robust activity in selective heavyweights and broader market resilience kept investor participation high.
Headline Indices and Market Breadth
As per provisional closing data, the 30-share S&P BSE Sensex declined by 171.72 points, or 0.22%, to settle at 77,369.11. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty 50 slipped 32.95 points, or 0.14%, to close at 24,219.05. Despite the day’s minor pullback, both benchmark indices managed to retain an upward trajectory over the past three trading sessions, logging cumulative gains of approximately 0.60% and 0.58%, respectively.
The broader market mirrored the cautious stance of frontline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index posted a negligible loss of 0.01%, while the BSE 250 SmallCap Index moved down by 0.17%. Market breadth leaned firmly negative on the BSE exchange, where 2,374 shares advanced, 2,924 declined, and 239 remained unchanged. Notably, defying the overall lackluster breadth, 8 stocks within the broader NSE 500 index scaled fresh record highs.

Key drivers included Welspun Corp (up 4.21%), Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL, up 3.57%), JSW Steel (up 2.57%), Hindalco Industries (up 2.37%), and National Aluminium Company (NALCO, up 2.24%).
- Nifty PSU Bank (Down 0.93% to 8,539.75): State-run lenders faced selling pressure, dragging the index lower after a recent run. Major underperformers included Bank of Baroda (down 2.23%), Canara Bank (down 2.05%), Punjab & Sind Bank (down 0.94%), State Bank of India (SBI, down 0.88%), and Indian Bank (down 0.74%).

Meanwhile, select counters in the Nifty IT and Nifty Realty spaces managed to post modest gains, offering localized support to the market floor.
