Bangladesh and China are expected to sign 15-17 bilateral instruments, including 13 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), two agreements, an action plan and a protocol, during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s upcoming visit to China, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam said on Saturday.
“There will be a discussion regarding the Teesta project,” Siam told reporters at a briefing at the Foreign Ministry.
Tarique will begin a two-nation tour on Sunday, visiting Malaysia and China. The delegation sizes for the two visits have been kept relatively small, with 27 members accompanying him to Malaysia and 28 to China. “We tried to keep it at a logical level,” the Foreign Secretary said.
The Prime Minister will leave for Kuala Lumpur on Sunday at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim before travelling to China on Monday at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang. It will be Tarique’s first overseas visit since assuming office in February.
In China, Tarique will attend the World Economic Forum’s 17th Annual Meeting of the New Champions, or Summer Davos Forum, in Dalian from June 23-25. More than 1,700 participants from over 90 countries and regions are expected to attend the event, themed “Innovating at Scale.”
Tarique is scheduled to hold talks with Premier Li on June 25 and meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on June 26 before returning to Bangladesh on Friday night.
According to officials, the Malaysia leg of the tour will focus on trade, labour cooperation and investment, while the China visit will seek to deepen cooperation in infrastructure, technology and development sectors.
